Louis XVI style bedSolid walnut Louis XVI style c1900, lovely colour Walnut wood
Walnut is the primary hardwood for some of the finest antique furniture.
The wood is moderately heavy, very strong, and exceptionally stable.
The colour varies from light gray-brown to dark purplish-brown, patterns from plain to highly figured.
The wood is readily polished and develops a rich patina that grows more lustrous with age.
Louis XVI Style
Towards the end of the nineteenth century a
revival of the Louis XVI style appeared in
Europe. Beds became more rectilinear and geometric with straight tapering posts inspired by Greek and Roman ruins.
Cabriole legs, gave way to cylindrical or square ones, floral themes were replaced by architectural ornament, carved ribbons,
guilloche and acanthus leaves.
