Walnut wood

Walnut is the primary hardwood for some of the finest antique furniture.
The wood is moderately heavy, very strong, and exceptionally stable. The colour varies from light gray-brown to dark purplish-brown, patterns from plain to highly figured.
The wood is readily polished and develops a rich patina that grows more lustrous with age.

Empire

The Empire period in antique French furniture embraced Greco-Roman models. Woods were primarily rosewood and mahogany with gilt accents, brass ormolu and bronze mounts.
Decorative elements of the Empire period included the human form, swans, chimeras, and sphinxes, and Greco-Roman geometric forms.
